December The classroom was buzzing with activity in December. The children have settled into a routine and are really starting to enjoy the predictable day and time to work. As you can see in the photos below the children have been working on lots of interesting and varied work in the classroom. The two young ladies in the first photo are looking at addition and seeing the numbers get larger as they put them together. In the second and fourth photo there are pictures of two friends working with a more abstract math work where all the numbers are on the same sized piece but have a different color. We also had friends learning what colors go together to make new colors. This is done by mixing colored water and recording what is seen. Art was a popular choice this month with all the new items to glue and make pictures. Below is a photo of a friend and the nativity she made after listening to a story about Jesus' birth.
Using all of the senses as we learn is important. Below are photos of children using the knobbed cylinders for size gradation and working the fingers. There is also a "sound" work where a friend is matching bell tones and strengthening her listening skills. Chatting with a friend and putting a puzzle together, listening to a story, and using the pink tower and brown stair together are all fun activities using the senses. Even learning letter sounds is done with the sense of touch and sound. The sandpaper letters let the child feel the motion of making letters before having to master writing.
We love the snow! The children really love the snow that last Friday's snowstorm left behind. We really enjoyed sledding and making snow angels!
Practice, Practice, Practice Do you remember when you learned how to tie? This is a very exciting lesson to a child. They will repeat it and repeat it over and over because it makes them proud to be independent.
Children Working
Show and Tell A friend brought in a pheasant feather for his classmates to see. The children really loved seeing the pattern in the feather and noticing the beautiful colors.
