Thanksgiving Break Wednesday, November 26 - Friday, November 28 Parent Education Night Thank you to all that came to our Parent Education Night this month. We began a series of talks on developing strong readers. The Jim Trelease video explained the importance of reading to our children for enjoyment throughout the education - age 0 to 18. Our next talk in the series will be in February.
The Natural Development of a Reader and Writer Many adults have limited memories of learning to read. The memories we have are directly related to the type of reader we were and may still perhaps be. If reading was a skill acquired with an average amount of effort we have fewer memories than someone that required a greater degree of effort. Regardless of the type of reader we were, the level of enjoyment we experienced from it or our preferred reading material, then or now, we are often unsure of how to help our own children conquer the one skill that is one of the most important skills we have in life. We use reading and writing to communicate ideas, record history and to escape to places of fantasy. Parents recognize the absolute importance of their children becoming strong readers and look for ways to help their children. We would like to invite all parents to a presentation on the natural development of a reader and writer on Monday, November 17 at 7 p.m. at the Children's House Campus. We will discuss the sequence of skill necessary to learn to read, the materials and techniques used to develop those skills and introduce you to the research pm reading development. We are excited to present a video presentation given by Jim Trelease, the author of The Read Aloud Book, on current research. Reading is a skill that is truly initiated and nurtured at home. At school we offer experiences, materials and sequentially planned activities to support what was started before the child began formal schooling.
